This spring Mr. Cox was nominated by a student for the Grammy Music Educator Award.  After the initial screening of the applicants they are narrowed down to 189 Quarter finalist.  Mr. Cox has been included on this list!

At this level, nominees are expected to prepare three videos for submission to a screening committee and 25 semi-finalist will be announced in September.  The following is Mr. Cox's submission.  We would like to thank all of the band and community members that participated in this project.

Video 1

1) Please submit a 2 – 4 minute video OR a maximum 400 word essay in which you cover the following topics:
  • One of your proudest moments as a teacher.
  • One of your most significant challenges and how you address or have addressed it.
  • What unique, innovative teaching methodologies do you implement in your classroom?
  • Other ways you have made and continue to make a positive impact as a music teacher.

2) Please submit a 2 – 4 minute video OR maximum 400 word essay in which you cover as many of the following topics as are applicable to you. (If you submit a video, please include at least 2 testimonials from your students, peers, or community members as part of conveying your impact. If you are submitting an essay, you can include written testimonials by uploading them in the at the bottom of the application.)
  • How you are making a measurable difference in the lives of your students.
  • How you are making a significant impact on your school and the surrounding community.
  • How you are making significant and lasting contribution to the field of music (research, etc…)
  • How have you demonstrated a commitment to the broader cause of advocacy for maintaining quality music education in the schools?

Video 3

3) Please provide a video recording of you teaching and/or directing in ONE classroom session (NOT a performance). The recording may be of a rehearsal or any non-performance music class. Please include a slide or brief verbal description/goal of the class segment that you will be recording. The length of the excerpt should be a continuous time period of 8 minutes (i.e., no cuts within that time frame). Determine optimal camera placement. It is optimal to place the camera on a tripod at the side of the room and, if possible, set it up high on a counter or table. Set the lens to a wide angle. It is important for an evaluator to be able to see you and your students together, your students’ reactions to what you are doing, and their engagement in learning. Avoid trying to follow a conversation back and forth between different people by panning the camera too much. Please ensure all of the audio recorded is clear and understandable (yourself, students, etc.) Use clip on mics when needed (if available).
